Da beschwert sich noch einmal jemand über zu wenig Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. Während der letzten neun Monate war es immer ein Vergnügen die Waterloo Bridge von Süden nach Norden zu überqueren. Nicht zuletzt wegen der sich immer ändernden aktuell ausgestellten Kunst rund um die Royal Festival Hall und das National Theatre.
Von den Londonern oft als “Armenviertel” der Stadt abgetan wird die Southbank vernachlässigt. Dabei sollte man sich einmal die Zeit nehmen und von der Hungerford Bridge flussabwärts spazieren. Ich sag hier bewusst ab der Hungerford Bridge und nicht dem London Eye, wegen dem hohen Aufkommen an Touristen. Ziel des Spazierganges könnte die Tower Bridge sein. Entlang der Strecke finden sich einige nette Pubs (mit Aussicht auf St. Paul’s zum Beispiel), Straßen und das Tate Modern. Auch wenn man kein Freund der zeitgenössischen Kunst ist überzeugt einen vielleicht das Restaurant im 6. Stock. Vom kleinen oder großen Hunger geplagt findet man auch ein reichhaltiges Angebot rund um die Royal Festival Hall. Der Real-Food-Market, welcher oft diverse Themen wie zum Beispiel “Schokolade” behandelt, verwöhnt den Gaumen von Schleckermäulern. Für nähere Informationen einfach die Homepage konsultieren.
Really, there is no need to complain about not having enough art at public places. During the past nine months it has always been a pleasure to cross Waterloo Bridge from the South to the North. Not at least because the exhibits displayed at Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre have been constantly changed.
Talking to a Londoner about the Southbank you will hardly hear anything overwhelmingly positive. But that’s actually not true. There’s more to discover. One nice afternoon walk downstream towards Tower Bridge and discover all the nice pubs that offer a great view (St. Paul’s), streets and the Tate Modern. If you are not so much into modern art the restaurant on the 6th floor might actually convince you to visit the Tate Modern nevertheless. Feel hungry while exploring the Southbank? Out and about the Royal Festival Hall there is a fast offer of different food. The Real Food Market spoils its visitors with food from all over the world or it might be dedicated to a topic like for example “chocolate”.
